Proprietor of the Afe Babalola University of Ado-Ekiti, Chief (Dr.) Afe Babalola (SAN), has admonished the Nigerian football authorities to go back to the basics where the natural talents abound.
Babalola said this while receiving former Super Eagles Coach, Samson Siasia, in his university’s permanent site ahead of the finals of the third Founder’s Day of the university.
Babalola said: “I had followed your career as a player and as a coach. I am still angry about your sack. Football at that level is supposed to be developmental. Coaches’ performance cannot and should not be tied to championships.
“I am happy you are here. Your presence will boost the University Sports League mentored by Emmanuel Omijeh and the National University Commission headed by Professor Julius Okojie.”
The Aare Baamofin of Yorubaland gave a prophesy: “Don’t be discouraged. Work harder and you are coming back greater. The future ahead of you is bright. Mark my words.”
The Founder’s Day had four sports events competed for within the university’s eight club USL structure.
In the football final, Phantoms beat Highlanders in a tough 1-0 match with the only goal scored by Uduak Marshal.
As at press time yesterday, Volleyball, basketball and tennis were having their final.
In today’s inter-murral games, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo’s Bells University will be playing Chief Afe Babalola’s university in football, thus putting to test the USL model.
