The Senate Committee on the Independent National Electoral Commission in Abuja on Wednesday ruled out the possibility of e-voting in the 2015 general election.
The Vice Chairman of the committee, Senator Alikali Abdulkadir, said the commission lacked adequate infrastructure to conduct such election.
Abdulkadir, who spoke at the unveiling of a six-year strategic plan for INEC, said for now, there would be no e-voting in the electoral process.
He said it was the function of INEC to conduct elections into principal elective offices such as those of the president, vice-president, governors and deputy governors, the Senate and House of Representatives as well as the FCT Area councils.
He said the commission was also charged with the responsibility of producing and maintaining a national register of voters and regulates the activities of the political parties.
Abdulkadir said the committee was working on the amendment of the 1999 Constitution with special focus on strengthening of INEC through legislation.
He said the possibility of e-voting in the nearest future might not be ruled out, but by then all the necessary apparatus must have been provided with adequate sensitisation and legal backing.
He said the committee was working on various aspects of the constitution under the amendment exercise to support INEC to achieve the desired goals for a better democratic dispensation.
According to him, the committee is looking into the aspects of the constitution as it concern transfer of voters in various states.
He said consideration must be giving to people in Yobe, Borno and Kano under emergency rule.
He said a great number of the people had been displaced and it had become imperative for them to fulfil their electoral responsibilities.
