In an outburst of joy and happiness, the immediate past Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly and Senator representing Oyo Central Senatorial District, Senator Monsurat Sunmonu, celebrated with the Governor of Oyo State, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, as his mandate was upheld by the election tribunal on Tuesday.
The candidate of the Accord Party in the April 11, 2015 governorship election in the state, Senator Rashidi Ladoja, had gone to the Tribunal to challenge the victory of Ajimobi, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress.
The Tribunal upheld the election of Ajimobi.
In a statement on Tuesday, Sumnonu, the first female Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, expressed her joy over what she termed the resounding voice of the people.
She said: “I have always believed that whoever works hard can never be brought down; while I was Speaker during Governor Ajimobi’s first term, we worked tirelessly for the people and this earned us their trust for a second term. One then wonders why some politicians refused to accept defeat in good faith and move on. We thank God for this victory and I rejoice with my governor.”
Sunmonu went on to reiterate her commitment to the people of Oyo Central Senatorial District and the state at large, promising to always put their interest at the forefront of all her activities in the Senate.
Sunmonu also solicited for unwavering support for the government of Ajimobi in his quest to make Oyo State an enviable standard for modern governance.
“The best we can do right now is for the whole state to give full and wholehearted support to the government of Sen. Abiola Ajimobi and his continuity programme, so that Oyo State can be a benchmark for good governance in this country,” she said.
With cooperation among the federal, state and local governments, Senator Sunmonu expressed confidence and excitement that the next four years would mark a positive change in the fortunes of Oyo State.
