Security guard bags five hours community service for theft

A Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos, on Wednesday sentenced a 25-year-old security guard, Philip Thomas, to five hours of community service.

Thomas, who resides in Gbagada area of Lagos, was arraigned on Feb. 24, on a count charge of stealing properties of his employer valued at N500,000.

Chief Magistrate, Linda Balogun, handed down the sentence, following the guilty plea of the convict.

She sentenced the convict to serve his time at the Yaba Old Peoples’ home without an option of a fine.

Police prosecutor, Insp Modupe Olaluwoye, told the court that the convict committed the offence at No. 16, Olujobi str., in Anthony area of Gbagada, Lagos.

She said that Thomas stole five cartons of umbrella, a Plasma television and a rechargeable fan, all valued at N500,000.

According to her, the convict stole the items from the complainant,  Izevbizua Igiehon’s house and hired a taxi to cart them away.

She stated that the convict was arrested when the security man at estate’s gate  insisted on calling the complainant to confirm if he was moving out.

Olaluwoye noted that the offence contravened Section 287 (7) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).
