Scottish First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, is expected to send a letter to British Prime Minister, Theresa May, on Friday to request permission for a second referendum for Scottish independence, a local media reported.
The Scottish devolved government posted a photograph of Sturgeon “working on final draft” of the letter to May at Sturgeon’s office in Edinburgh late on Thursday.
Scotland’s devolved parliament voted to support Sturgeon’s plan for a second referendum on Tuesday.
At the last referendum in 2014, 55 per cent voted against independence.
Sturgeon, who leads the Scottish National Party, complained that her efforts to seek a compromise on Britain’s exit from the European Union were met with intransigence from May’s Conservative government.
She insists that a second referendum is needed because Brexit, particularly May’s plan to withdraw from the EU single market, would alter Scotland’s relationships with Britain and Europe against its will.
May has said a second referendum would be “divisive and cause huge economic uncertainty at the worst possible time”.
She is expected to seek to delay the process and persuade the SNP to conduct a referendum after Britain completes the Brexit process, which is currently expected by March 2019.
More than 60 per cent of voters in Scotland opted to stay in the EU in the Brexit referendum, while 52 per cent voted for Brexit across Britain and Northern Ireland.
