The Vice President, Arc. Mohammed Namadi Sambo, has ordered the committee on the Interim Implementation on the Reform of the Nigeria Police to make a comprehensive plan to enable stakeholders support the police on areas of need.
Speaking on Friday at the meeting of the committee in the State House, Abuja, Vice President Sambo said the Minister of Police Affairs, Caleb Olubolade, and the Acting Inspector General of Police, Abubakar Mohammed, should work with a sub-committee already set up to come up with the actual plan of needs by the Force to enable the committee discuss it with the state governors and other stakeholders.
He stated that the needs of each state police command should be harmonised to ensure that standard is maintained and to be discussed at the National Economic Council.
Sambo noted that in the reform plan, the Federal Government was to provide 32 per cent of the total funding of N1.5 trillion while states and local governments were to provide for 28 per cent and the balance was to be handled by the private sector, adding that the Federal Government has provided its own share.
While deliberating on several issues, including the role of the Nigeria Civil Defence and Security Corps, it was noted that the NCDSC would assist as the police is saddled with enormous responsibilities.
It was also noted that in as much as the NCDSC will do this, its legality and the fact that the organisation is carrying arms should be looked into.
The VP advised that a meeting be arranged with the Minister of Communications and the Chairman of the Nigeria Communications Commission to discuss the relocation of the frequency, which the police is to use for its communications, and the need to locate most of the CCTV camera where people would not damage it or remove its components.
The Vice President also inspected the control room of the CCTV at Louise Edet House, Police Headquarters and reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to protect life and property of every Nigerian and that of foreigners in the country.
Some of those at the meeting were the Minister of Police Affairs, Caleb Olubolade; Representative of the NSA; Acting IGP, Abubakar Mohammed; Governor of Cross River State, Liyel Imoke; representative of the Governor of Oyo State; and the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Police Affairs.
