A Dei-Dei Grade 1 Area Court in Shagari Quarters, Abuja, on Monday sentenced a 27-year-old sales representative, Yusuf Isah, to six months imprisonment for defrauding his employer of N275,400 money made from the sale of bread.
Isah of No 14 Wole Soynka Crescent, Gwarinpa, Abuja, was sentenced on a two-count charge of criminal breach of trust and cheating.
The Area Court judge, Suleyman Ola, however, gave Isah an option of N30,000 fine and ordered him to pay N275,400 as compensation to the complainant.
Ola warned the convict to be of good behaviour.
Isah had earlier pleaded guilty and begged the court for leniency
The Prosecution Counsel, Chinedu Ogada, told the court that the complainant, Kenneth Okafor, the accountant at Dorena Bakers Ltd., Abuja, reported the matter at the Gwarinpa police station on March 10.
Ogada said that the convict was employed as a sales representative of the bakery and was entrusted with the company’s vehicle to be marketing bread and remitting the money daily.
He added that the convict sold the company’s 551 loaves of bread, valued at N275,400, and dishonestly refused to remit the money.
He said the convict fraudulently converted the company’s money to his personal use and during police investigation he could not give a satisfactory account of the money.
Ogada told the court that all efforts made to recover the money from the convict failed.
The offence, he said, contravened the provisions of sections 312 and 322 of the penal code.
