The House of Representatives has called on the National Emergency Management Agency to provide relief materials to Bassa-Kwomu and Ebira People of Bassa Local Government Area of Kogi State.
This followed a motion by Hon. Ikani Okolo during plenary on Tuesday.
Moving the motion, Okolo explained that the two communities had lived peacefully for generations with the six wards of the 10 electoral wards of Bassa Local Government Area.
Okolo said: “On November 28, 2016, violent crisis erupted at Kpanche in Ozongolo ward in Bassa-Kwomu district of the council area that disrupted peace and harmony between the two districts and consequently led to destruction of lives and properties.
“A development that has aggravated the magnitude of suspicion, hatred and tizzy among the communities.”
Okolo emphasised that so much could be done by the government to ameliorate the situation that had resulted into confusion, fear, frustration and agony with a view to averting a recurrence of the incident.
The motion was unanimously adopted by members when it was put to a voice vote by the Speaker, Yakubu Dogara.
The House, therefore, urged NEMA to embark on an on-the-spot assessment of the area in order to ascertain the level of destruction.
NEMA was also urged to provide relief materials and aid to those who lost their houses and other properties during the crisis.
The House mandated its Committee on Emergency and Disaster Preparedness to ensure implementation.
