The House of Representatives on Wednesday directed the Committees on Interior, Public Safety and National Security to investigate the existence of alleged 1,487 illegal routes into Nigeria.
The committee is expected to interface with the Nigeria Immigration Service, the Department of State Security and the National Intelligence Agency.
This resolution followed a motion by Representative James Falake (APC-Lagos), which was unanimously adopted.
According to Falake, the NIS and the National Boundaries Commission had identified 84 regular borders and 1,487 illegal routes into the country.
He noted that in spite of the existence of the NIS and the Nigeria Border Security, there were illegal routes from neighbouring countries.
The lawmaker stressed that these illegal routes constituted security challenges at a time when the country was tackling insurgency and terrorism.
He said that since the discovery of the routes, the NIS had not taken any positive action on the matter.
In his contribution, Representative Nicholas Ossai (PDP-Delta), said that the country’s porous borders had negative effects on the economy and security of the country.
Ossai said that foreigners would take advantage of the porous nature of our border to spy on Nigeria.
