Reps back call for FG to takeover Abia Poly

The House of Representatives has adopted the motion calling on the Federal Government to take over the management of the Abia State Polytechnic in Aba and convert it into a federal institution.
Hon. Uzo Azubuike, who represents Aba North/Aba South in the House of Representatives, moved the emotion calling on the Federal Government to take over Abia Poly on the grounds that Aba is strategic in the development of Nigeria’s economy because of its heavy indigenous industrial and technical ingenuity and thus needs a Federal Polytechnic to enhance technological and industrial development.
Azubuike also said that the huge capital requirement for proper running of the Abia State Polytechnic has become enormous for the state to shoulder vis-a-vis the limited finances of the state, which habours enormous industrial and indigenous technological talents, adding that every other state has a Federal Polytechnic, except Abia State.
The House has forwarded the motion to its Committee on Education to commence legislative actions and report back to the House soon, to see the possibility of the taking over of the state school by the Federal Government.
Azubuike said: “The importance of education in the development of our country, especially sound and qualitative polytechnic education, which provides practical, technical knowledge and skills necessary for the agricultural, industrial, commercial and economic transformation of Nigeria, cannot be overemphasized.
“The Abia State Polytechnic, situated in the heart of Aba and owned by the state government, has grown big and developed facilities but many approved courses cannot take off due to lack of funds to provide the requisite infrastructure and personnel.
“The only Federal Government presence in Aba is the Nigerian Police and Federal Prisons and there is no presence federal polytechnic anywhere in Abia State.”
