Sagamu-based Nigeria Professional Football League side, Remo Stars 1-0 defeat of Abia Warriors on Sunday has saved them from the relegation zone in the elite division though campaign is still beginning.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the newly promoted Ogun Remo Stars had lost their opening fixture at home 1-2 to Plateau United and also lost with the same margin away to NPFL debutants, Gombe United.
However, to salvage its precarious start to life in the elite division, the club, nicknamed “The Sky Blue,” put on a last minute effort to dispatch Abia Warriors with a lone goal.
The match, played at the home ground of Remo Stars, Sagamu International Stadium, saw Victor Mbaoma’s dramatic late goal as a consolation to save the team from the relegation zone.
Mbaoma scored the only goal of the game through a well taken penalty in the injury time of the match.
Remo Stars before the match occupied the last position on the competition’s log but the three points win has earned the team 14th place.
The team’s gaffer, Daniel Ogunbodede, however, blamed the two successive defeats of his team on inexperience on the part of his players, adding that the victory over Abia Warrior would boost their confidence.
Ogunmodeded said: “It is good that we won, the credit goes to the players; they keep pushing until we got the goal. The victory is good for our confidence.
“We have been able to deal with pressure after we lost the previous two matches. I think the result will help our confidence.”
Abia Warriors head coach, Abdullahi Biffo, praised his players for the efforts they put in though it was sad they lost.
Biffo said: “I must commend the brilliant performance of the players; we knew it would be difficult to play against a new team that lost their opening two games.
“We set up the team tactically and the players responded well. We defended as a team and we threatened in the attack. It is sad to lose the three points by conceding a late penalty.”
NAN reports that Remo Stars will play away to Nasarawa United who are placed 18th on the log for the Match Day 4 of the NPFL on Wednesday.
