Heavyweight boxer Alexander Povetkin is “stable” and has been released from hospital after his fight with coronavirus, his team have confirmed.
The Russian beat Dillian Whyte with a stunning one-punch knockout in their bout back in August, but the November rematch has been postponed after Povetkin was hospitalised with coronavirus.
His promoter has now confirmed that the 41-year-old is back home and recovering, as fans continue to wait for news of a rescheduled date for the highly-anticipated rematch
Speaking to World Boxing News, Andrey Ryabinskiy said: “Sasha has been released from the hospital today. He is now getting treatment at home.
“His doctor considers him to be stable. Sasha feels good right now, but it will definitely take some time for him to recover fully.
“He will not be starting any boxing training earlier than two to three weeks from now.”
A new date has been pencilled in for January 30, but it may be some time before that is confirmed as doctors continue to monitor Povetkin’s condition.
There have been suggestions over the last week that Whyte is searching for an alternative opponent following Povetkin’s positive Covid test.
Derek Chisora stepped forward to offer his services in an all-Matchroom clash, but Eddie Hearn believes that Whyte is only likely to accept a bout with Povetkin or Tyson Fury.
Whyte has twice beaten Chisora in the past, and the latter is desperate for a trilogy bout to improve his record.
