The Anambra State Police Command on Monday confirmed the rescue of a 75-year-old woman, simply identified as Mrs. Edeh, kidnapped by a four-man gang in Ihiala Local Government Area.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Emeka Chukwuemeka, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Awka, the state capital, that the victim was kidnapped on Monday morning at about 8am.
Chukwuemeka said that the woman was rescued after a 30 minutes gun duel with the hoodlums.
The spokesman said the hoodlums, who abducted Edeh in a 190 Mercedez Benz car at Umunamehi in Ihiala, shot sporadically in the air to scare people away.
He said that the shooting attracted the attention of passers-by who alerted the police.
Chukwuemeka said that policemen, who were drafted to the scene, chased the suspects to the nearby community of Uli where they challenged the police to a gun duel.
He said: “The duel resulted in the arrest of one of the abductors while the other three escaped by jumping into the bush and abandoning their victim in the car.
“The suspect, a 25-year-old man, was arrested and is now assisting the police in its investigations.”
An eyewitness told NAN that when the suspect was taken to the police station at Uli, the police had to restrain youths from the area who attempted to lynch him.
