Police recovers Damoche’s phone, warns cultists

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Prince Umar Manko, has assured students of the Lagos State University of adequate security.
The police boss, however, warned students who engage in cult activities and violence to desist from the act or face the full wrath of the law.
This warning is coming after officers of the Lagos State Police Command said they have arrested a guard with a mobile phone belonging to slain student, Damilola Olaniyan, popularly known as Damino Damoche.
Manko, who spoke to journalists after the state security council meeting on Wednesday, held at the Lagos House, Marina, also assured the university community of adequate security.
He said: “For the LASU students, they should go to their classes and read.
“The miscreants among them are going to be fished out and dealt with according to the law.
“That should not be a problem at all.
“They should be rest assured that they are part of Lagos State and the security in Lagos State is intact.
“They are going to benefit from that.”
Concerning the violent cult killing at the university, the Lagos State Police Command spokesperson, Ngozi Braide, confirmed the arrest of the guard who allegedly stole Olaniyan’s phone.
Police sources said: “Few days after Olaniyan’s death, the security guard took the phone to Ojo Police Division where he told policemen that the phone was given to him by a student.
“The policemen asked the security guard to disclose the identity of the student that gave him the phone, but he was unable to do so and was immediately detained.”
Braide said the guard is undergoing interrogation to find out how he came about Damoche’s phone.
Braide said: “After he (Olaniyan) was killed, his phone was missing.
“Later on, a security guard at the school brought the phone to the police, saying it was given to him by a student.
“He was however unable to disclose the identity of the said student, which is crucial to investigation.”
Speaking on the enforcement of the restriction of motorcycles on some routes in the state, Manko said the enforcement has reduced crime in the state while warning security operatives to adhere strictly to the traffic law as the law is no respecter of persons.
He said: “We want to reassure Lagosians that security in Lagos is still intact.
“People should go about their normal businesses.
“There is no threat from any quarters.
“We have seen the extent of the enforcement of this law on commercial motorcycles on restricted areas and we have discovered that the non-compliance aspect of it is involving more of our men in uniform.
“We want to restate that this law is not respecting any uniform.
“It is a general law and everybody is duty bound to comply with it.
“Officers and men still indulging in flouting the law should desist in their own interests and obey the laws as they are not above the law.
“Anybody who decides to take the law into his hands will face the consequences.”
The police boss also urged residents to go about their business without fear as he stated that the explosive device that detonated at the Mile 2 area of the state does not portray terrorists’ activities but an unfortunate incident. which is being investigated.
