Ahead of the rescheduled general elections, President Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday held a closed doors meeting with former Head of State, General Abdusalami Abubakar; and a former South African leader, Thabo Mbeki.
The meeting, held at the residence of the President in the State House, Abuja, was also attended by the Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh; the Inspector-General of Police, Suleiman Abba; the Special Adviser to the President on Inter-Party Relations, Senator Ben Obi; and leaders of some political parties.
Also in attendance were the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Sa’ad Abubakar III; the Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, John Cardinal Onaiyekan; the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah; and former Chief of General Staff, Commodore Ebitu Ukiwe.
There was no briefing after the meeting, but The Eagle Online gathered that the focus was on how to ensure peace and tranquility before, during and after the elections.
General Abubakar, who chairs the National Peace Committee for the 2015 General Elections, was said to have briefed the meeting on the outcome of the talks he held with the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega, on Saturday.
