The Independent National Electoral Commission has promised to deliver a free and fair election on October 20, 2012 when the governorship election in Ondo State holds, just as the police warned trouble makers to steer off the state during the election.
The chairman of INEC, Attahiru Jega, and the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Dahiru Abubakar, spoke on the plans of their outfits for the poll, less than 72 hours to the election.
Jega and Abubakar, who spoke at a stakeholders’ forum in Akure, the state capital, ahead of the election, said all would be done to deliver on a credible poll.
Jega advised political parties to play the game according to the rules during the election.
He said: “INEC will comply with the law.
“Any staff who does anything contrary to the law, would be dealt with in line with the Electoral Act.
“There are improvements in the subsequent elections after 2007 because the commission was committed to the full compliance with the law.”
Abubakar announced security measures for the election.
He said there would be restrictions of movement before and during the poll.
He said no fewer than three security personnel would be attached to each of the 3007 poling units in the state, adding that they would be drawn from the police, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Nigeria Immigration Service and the Nigeria Customs Service.
He said not less than 20 Armoured Personnel Carriers would be provided for the election.
Movement would be restricted from 6pm on Thursday to 6am on Friday and from 6pm on Friday to 8pm on Saturday.
