The Ondo State Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, appears set to break the jinx surrounding the failure of incumbents to win their re-election bids in the state.
This follows Mimiko’s early lead in Saturday’s election, defeating one of his opponents even in his (opponent’s) own polling unit.
No governor in the history of the state has served two terms.
In the results released officially so far, Mimiko is leading.
Mimiko, the candidate of the Labour Party, crushed his main opponents in the race, Rotimi Akeredolu of the Action Congress of Nigeria and Olusola Oke of the Peoples Democratic Party, in Ward 7, Ondo town.
Mimiko is from the ward.
He scored 348 votes while Akeredolu had 16 and Oke 11.
In Akeredolu’s Ijebu 2, Ward 5, Unit 6 in Owo, Ondo State, Mimiko got 144 votes to defeat the son of the soil who received 139 votes, while Oke secured 35 votes.
Overall, Mimiko is leading, according to figures so far collated.
