Widows of policemen killed in Alakyo village, Nasarawa State a year ago on Tuesday said they were yet to receive the monetary assistance promised them by the Northern States Governors Forum.
The spokesperson for the widows, Afiniki Daniel, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Akwanga, Nasarawa State: “Even the promise of jobs by the state government has not been fulfilled.
“We are still expecting the promise made to us one year ago by Northern States Governors Forum through its Chairman, Babangida Aliyu, the Governor of Niger State.
“Apart from the forum, the state government is yet to help the qualified once among us to get employment to alleviate our suffering.”
Daniel appealed to the forum to redeem the N100 million it pledged to the widows of the over 70 policemen killed on May 7, 2013 by Ombatse militia.
He said: “The widows are undergoing serious hardship and the money will help us in the upkeep and payment of school fees of the children our husbands left behind.
“Catering for the family after the death of our husbands has not been easy, considering the fact that most of the widows are unemployed.
“Instead of our husband’s families to sympathise with us over what had happened, some of them are putting pressure on us to give them money.
“They are thinking that all the promises made to us have been fulfilled.”
Daniel said that some of them had degree and diploma certificates and urged government, individuals and corporate organisations to offer them employment to start a new life.
When contacted on the matter, Malam Danladi Ndeyebo, media aide to Aliyu, said he would contact the forum’s secretariat to find out details on the matter and respond in due course.
