The Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, was among personalities who were on Saturday in Abuja conferred with the Ohuhu Welfare Union award of Excellence and Achievement.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that other awardees were Chief Onyema Ugochukwu, General Azubuike Ihejirika (rtd), Assistant Inspector General of Police Chintua Amajor-Onu and Chief Uzo Nwosu, among others.
The Chairman of the occasion, Chief Enyinnaya Onokala, presented the award to the minister in absentia.
Onokala said that the award was in recognition of the Okonjo-Iweala’s steady contribution and courage in tackling the country’s economic challenges.
He said: “She has been a steady hand, endowed with relentless courage and intellect.
“Ohuhu people thank you for all you have done in addressing many perplexing and complex problems of the country’s economy.
“We appreciate her hard work.”
Onokala, however, urged members of the union to collectively strive to strengthen and encourage youths in their communities to develop leadership skills to ensure a better future for the country.
He also tasked members of the union to broaden and deepen their political consciousness to enable them secure their community.
In his address, Mazi Daniel Ugwu, the President of the union, noted that the presentation of awards to the recipients was an expression of gratitude for their contribution to the development of the country.
Dr. Ngozi Udodirim, the Chairman/Chief Judge of Investments and Securities Tribunal, one of the awardees, thanked the union for recognising her hard work.
Udodirim said this recognition would motivate her to work harder for the development of the country and the union.
She said: “I am very happy to be recognised today by this union.
“I am in total support of education, entrepreneurship and culture.
“Therefore I promise to support the women wing of the union and the entire union to ensure onward growth of Abia State.”
Other highlight of the ceremony was award of scholarships to seven students of Ohuhu community.
The scholarship covers tuition fees throughout the students’ university education.
Nwaegbu Chiemeka, a computer science student of the Michael Okpara University, Umudike, Abia State, one of the beneficiaries. thanked the union for the kind gesture on behalf of other beneficiaries.
Chiemeka said: “We will take this opportunity seriously and do our best to make you and the country proud.”
