Plateau United FC of Jos have defeated Nasarawa United FC of Lafia 2-1 in the Week 24 fixture of the Nigeria Professional Football League.
The match that was played on Sunday at the Zaria Road Stadium, Jos, had Amos Gyang and Mustapha Ibrahim scoring the first and second goals for the Lalong Boys in the 30th and 87th minutes of the match respectively.
Nasarawa united scored its only goal of the fierce encounter in the 41st minute.
Speaking shortly after the match, Abdul Maikaba, Plateau United Head Coach, commended his players for winning the game.
Maikaba said though his boys missed a lot of chances in the match, but expressed satisfaction that the win had placed the team on top of the league table.
He said: “The game was a tough one; the Solid Miners played well.
“My boys played better, but they threw away a lot of scoring chances.
“However, I am happy that at the end, we won the match.
“This means that we are still topping the league table and I want to assure our teaming supporters and Plateau people that we will not disappoint them.”
The Head of Coach of Nasarawa United, Bala Nikyu, declined to speak to journalists.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that all the players of the two teams wore black arm bands to honour the late Nasarawa united defender, Chineme Martins, who slumped and died last Sunday on the pitch.
Similarly, a minute silence was observed at the stadium to honour the deceased player.
NAN also reports that a functional ambulance and a vehicle of the Nigerian Red Cross Society kitted with medical facilities to respond to any emergency were stationed at the stadium during the match.
This was in compliance with the directives of the Nigeria Football Federation and the League Management Company.
