Kano Pillars Football Club on Sunday defeated visiting El-Kanemi Warriors of Maiduguri 2-1 in a week 14 fixture of the 2018/2019 Nigeria Professional Football League.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the match played at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano was watched by a large number of spectators.
The hosts secured victory through goals scored in the eighth and 63rd minutes by Gambo Muhammad and David Ebuka respectively.
Muhammad headed in a rebound in the goal area to set the tone for the victory and place his team in the game’s driving seat.
Substitute Ebuka extended their lead with a solo effort in the 63rd minute.
Former Kano Pillars’ player Bello Kofarmata scored for the visitors from the penalty kick spot in the 69th minute of the encounter.
Both teams had several scoring chances in the first half but could not score.
Coach Ibrahim Musa of Kano Pillars later told newsmen that his team played well, describing it as a good performance.
He said his players were up against a very good team and a good coach, adding that he was grateful that his players converted some of their chances.
Speaking on the team’s next match against Akwa United, Musa said his team would strategise to pick the maximum points.
The coach of El-Kanemi Warriors, Babaganaru Muhammad, on his part said his players performed very well in spite of losing the game.
He however said his target was for his team to finish within the top three positions in the league.
NAN reports that Kano Pillars now have 23 points from 14 games and will be guests of Akwa United on April 14.
