The management of the Nigerian Ports Authority on Friday directed terminal operators to make service automation a priority.
The NPA Director of Finance, Malam Mohammed Bello-Koko, who gave the directive at a stakeholders meeting in Lagos, said that automation would help in decongesting the ports and fast-track trade.
According to Bello-Koko, the NPA is working out modalities to streamline human traffic, while operators should complement this by service automation.
He stated: “The management of NPA will come up with a new accreditation formula in order to discourage wandering in the ports.
“It is part of the reformation that has begun since the new management took off.
“As partners, it will be necessary for you to imbibe service automation so as to facilitate the maritime trade.”
Bello-Koko said with automation, physical human contact would be minimized and unhealthy frictions eliminated.
According to him, it is worrisome to witness a typical work day in Apapa environs and its attendant air pollution from rickety trucks.
Bello-Koko said the port access roads ought to be the best maintained in the country as obtainable in other maritime societies.
He commented further: “Considering the strategic importance of the ports against the backdrop of the reduced oil earnings, the ports place would be made business- friendly.
“It is going to be a holistic arrangement between the Federal Government agencies and the Lagos State Government to ensure that all traffic bottlenecks are dismantled around the ports.”
