Nigeria’s Lanre Glover joins CAHB executive

It was celebration galore for the Handball family in Nigeria following the election of Nigeria’s Dr. Lanre Glover into the Executive body of the Confederation of African Handball in Ougaudougou, Burkina Faso, which had 41 of the 50 members participating.
The victory, which came at the 18th Elective Congress of Confederation of African Handball, saw the Nigerian candidate having an easy ride over his opponent from Garbon, Dr. Nicole Assele, who incidentally was the immediate past Secretary General of CAHB.
Glover, who was a former President of the Handball Federation of Nigeria and immediate past First Vice President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee, defied all odds to become the only Anglo-phone executive member of CAHB, an association that has over 90 per cent Franco-phone and 10 per cent Anglo-phone members.
Assele stepped down few minutes before the election, having acknowledged that defeat was staring her on the face.
She went ahead to also lose her Secretary General’s position to Charles Omboumahou from Congo Brazzaville with a 27-10 margin.
Dr. Aremou Mansourou from Benin Republic was re-elected as the president while the duo of Elbeltagy Medhat from Egypt and Dogbo Yawovi Auguste from Togo were returned unopposed to 2nd Vice President and Treasurer respectively.
While reacting on his election, Glover thanked his opponent who saw him as a better option for the position and subsequently said that he would not fail on the arduous task already given to him by the 50-member association, adding that much credit must go to Handball Federation of Nigeria, especially the President, Alhaji Yusuf Dauda, who actively mobilised support for him.
He said: “The president of the Handball Federation of Nigeria did a lot of good work for me in Burkina Faso especially.
“The president was my back bone.
“He did a very good job in mobilising support and seriously convinced a lot of countries to see why they should support Nigeria’s candidate.
“With this victory, Nigeria is now well represented in the body of handball in Africa, which by implication will translate to the world.
“We will not be shortchanged again and all the privileges that will be accrued to Nigeria must surely come to us.”
Dauda described Glover as the right flag bearer who has the necessary skills to develop the game of handball, stating that his active nature in the administrative aspect of the game in Africa has not only succeeded in promoting the game in Nigeria, but placed Nigeria in a vantage position to take its rightful position in the game of handball in Africa.
