The Italian Navy has said that 1,250 illegal African immigrants were rescued between Northern Africa and the Italian Island of Sicily in the Mediterranean during the Christmas season.
It also said that it brought the remains of five other immigrants ashore in four operations.
Admiral Pierre Robivo of the Italian Navy said all those who were rescued had been transferred to Sicily and they were in good condition.
Robivo disclosed that a Nigerian woman gave birth aboard the vessel, observing that the immigrants were mainly from Central Africa.
He recalled that the International Organisation for Migration announced that 3,200 immigrants died during 2014 while attempting to reach the European coast throughout the Mediterranean.
