The Nigeria Women League Board, led by Chief Dilichukwu Onyedinma, has called on all stakeholders of women football in the country to come together as a united front to save the game in the country.
This clarion call was made on Thursday during the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, FCT chapter’s monthly sports forum, where sports individuals and administrators are made to answer questions bordering on the development of sports in the country.
Chief Onyedinma while answering some of the questions posted by journalists, noted that the major problem facing the women football league is that of inadequate funding by way of sponsorship.
She also assured corporate sponsors who embrace the Women League in the country of adequate mileage.
She said: “The Women Football League is one that needs to be nurtured and developed because it remains the pool where materials are selected for the National Women Teams in the country.
“Also, it provides job opportunities for thousands of youths and helps to keep our young ladies off the street and away from social vices.
“But it’s sad that despite the success which the Nigeria Women National Teams have achieved through the women league, we still don’t have corporate sponsors.”
Onyedinma, who was accompanied by her board members, further called on the wives of state governors and women generally to support women league as it is their primary constituency, while also noting that the league is capable of projecting Nigeria on the global scene.
“If you look at the Super Falcons, they have won the Africa Women Championship a record eight times while the Super Eagles have only won the Nations Cup three times, yet people tend to recognize the Eagles more than the Falcons,” Onyedima lamented.
At the end of the forum, Chairman, FCT SWAN, Kayode Adeniyi, called on Nigerians to join hands with the FCT sports writers in ensuring rapid development of sports in Nigeria.
