The Niger State Government has called on the people of the state to embrace farming to enable the state sustain and improve on a robust agricultural growth and development along the value chain initiative to ensure food security and enhance export.
The Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Jonathan Tsado Vatsa, made this call in a statement.
Vatsa noted that the involvement of civil servants at spare times and the introduction of farm clubs in schools will be encouraged to create interest of students in agriculture at early age.
On this ground, the Commissioner noted that government was ready to ignite the passion that makes the people to invest in large scale agriculture by taking advantage of the large arable land in the state.
He reminded the people of the state that Governor Abubakar Sani Bello has always challenged “us all on the potential that state could meet the nation’s food requirement and feed other countries in West, North and Central Africa”.
Vatsa added: “It is true that the state’s agricultural sector had witnessed appreciable growth in the face of economic recession because this is one sector of the economy that engages many people. The number of rice growers in Niger state is increasing because of the incentives provided by the government.
“But we must surpass and sustain the growth. Serious farming, both crops farming and animal husbandry will add value to our economy. Niger State has large land mass for any farmer to utilise.
“Farming is a trade that has an assurance for daily transaction. The Governor Abubakar Sani Bello led government is ready to make fertilizer available to civil servants, schools and farmers who are prepared for aggressive farming.”
