Musa Amadu, the Secretary-General, Nigeria Football Federation, on Tuesday commended the appointment of eight Nigerians into the Standing Committees of the Confederation of Africa Football.
Amadu disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja, moments after CAF announced the approved appointments for the 2013/2015 season at its meeting held from May 15 to May 16 in Cairo.
The secretary said that the country stands to gain a lot from the appointments.
He said it was important that Nigeria was represented at the highest decision making body of CAF.
Amadu said: “We are happy that eight prominent Nigerians were considered worthy of been appointed into the standing committees and legal bodies of CAF because we stand to gain a lot from this.
“Although, we did lose out on the CAF Executive Committee seat, it is also important that we are adequately represented in the committees.”
The secretary added that the appointments were because CAF recognises the roles played by Nigeria and some other African countries in African football.
He added: “Nigeria, South Africa and Egypt are the three strongest nations in African football and CAF did well by giving them at least six slots each.
“That means they recognise the fact that these countries play prominent roles and are the strongest countries in West Africa, Southern Africa and North Africa respectively as far as African football is concerned.
“It also means that they recognise the importance of these countries and the support they give to CAF and its competitions.”
He, however, expressed optimism that the appointees would perform beyond expectations in delivering their duties.
Amadu said: “I am sure that within this period of 2013/ 2015, they will perform to the highest level and ensure that Nigeria is adequately represented together with its interest.
“This is to ensure that we can continue to be a very strong force in African football both on and outside the pitch.”
NAN reports that NFF’s President, Aminu Maigari, was appointed into the Organising Committee for the Orange Africa Cup of Nations.
The association’s first Vice-President, Mike Umeh, was appointed into the Organising Committee for Inter club competitions.
Another top Nigerian, Emeka Inyama, the Chairman of Media and Publicity, was appointed into the Media Committee, while NFA’s Technical Committee Chairman, Christopher Green, was appointed into the Disciplinary Board.
