The Director General of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Femi Ajayi, has vowed to confront drug barons in the country until they quit the criminal act.
Ajayi gave the assurance at the 2012 Ayegbaju Day celebration in Ekiti State, where he was conferred with the Chieftaincy title of Otunba Ayegbaju.
The Owa of Ayegbaju-Ekiti, Oba Solomon Oluwanle Adeloye, who conferred the title, said it was in in recognition of Ajayi’s contribution to community development.
Mrs. Iyabode Ajayi, wife of the DG, was also conferred with the title of Yeye Otunba Ayegbaju, for being a pillar of support to her husband.
Oba Solomon described Ajayi as an excellent manager of human and material resources.
In his words: “Otunba Ajayi is an easy going, humble and socially responsible community leader who has become a role model for progress-seeking youths in Nigeria.
“He is famous for the high number of Ekiti indigenes he has empowered to be entrepreneurs.”
Ajayi, who was overwhelmed by the reception, thanked the traditional ruler and the entire community for the honour.
According to Ajayi: “Every child has a right to a peaceful, drug-free society.
“This can only happen when drugs barons are kept out of the criminal trade.
“I will continue to work towards that enabling environment for the youths.
“I am honoured by this recognition and show of affection by my people.
“Community service to me is a way of life and I urge everyone to endeavour to identify a need and contribute their quota in assisting others.
“We can get the best if we work together.”
The NDLEA Director, who recently turned 55 years, is a multi-disciplinary professional and intellectual.
Born and bred at Ayegbaju Ekiti, he has a Bachelors of Science degree in Biochemistry from the University of Ife, now Obafemi Awolowo University.
He holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Journalism and a Master’s Degree in International Law and Diplomacy.
Ajayi was Science Editor with Daily Times Nigeria.
He served as National Information Officer for the United Nations Information Centre and later Communications Consultant to United Nations International Children’s Educational Fund.
Before his appointment as DG NDLEA, Ajayi was the Senior Special Assistant to President Goodluck Jonathan on Development Cooperation and Diaspora Relations.
The ceremony was witnessed by the Secretary to the Ekiti State Government, Alhaji Ganiyu Owolabi; Honourable Ade Ajayi, representing Oye Constituency in the House of Representative; and prominent Nigerians.
