A former Deputy Governor of Anambra, Dr. Chudi Nwike, who was recently killed by kidnappers, was on Friday interred in his country home, Ogbunike, in Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The 60-year-old Nwike, who was the deputy governor to Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife in 1992 on the ticket of the Social Democratic Party, was kidnapped on April 8 in Asaba, the Delta State capital, and killed later by his abductors.
Rev. Fr. Vincent Ejembi of Makurdi Catholic Diocese in his sermon at St. Vincent Catholic Church, Ibollo, Ogbunike, warned those who committed the crime to repent or incur the wrath of God.
Ejembi said that God would not forgive anybody who takes the life of his fellow human being.
According to him, the perpetrators still have the opportunity to come out of their evil ways.
The cleric, however, urged Nwike’s family, his community, the people of Anambra State and Nigerians in general to bear the loss and leave vengeance to God.
“God gives and takes. Vengeance is His,” Ejembi said.
The incumbent Anambra State Deputy Governor, Chief Emeka Isibudu, who represented Governor Peter Obi, paid glorying tributes to the late politician.
Isibudu, while thanking God for the deceased’s life, said that Nwike was a worthy son of the state, who made his contributions to its development.
“We are not happy over his death, but we must celebrate him and take the loss as Christians,” he said.
He appealed to the family to be more united now than before to ensure that their late father and husband’s legacies were kept alive.
Senator Margery Chuba-Okadigbo, representing Anambra North Senatorial District, urged the late Nwike’s wife, Jane, and family to find peace and comfort in knowing that his loss was felt by all the lives he had touched.
“His loving memory will remain evergreen in our hearts,” Chuba-Okadigbo said.
Senator Chris Ngige, in his condolence message to the family, acknowledged the inevitability of death as a mystery which solution lies with God.
“Yet it still comes as a shock when death happens, especially when it is the death of a brother and a friend,” Ngige said.
Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife, in his message, said: “What do I write?
“That conscience is dead in Nigeria.
“Conscience makes the difference between man and beast.
“With conscience dead, those brutish beasts, pointed their gun at the very gem of gentility, and indeed, pulled the trigger!
“Nigeria we shall hail thee!
“They took the money, killed the bearer of the money.
“Killed the cab driver – both strangers to them and strangers to each other.”
Godwin Ezeemuo, politician and owner of Orient Communication, urged the family to take heart and to be consoled by the fact that Nwike lived a good life.
Ezeemuo said: “He will be remembered for his astuteness and integrity as well as his selfless services to the community Ogbunike, Anambra and Nigeria as well.
“We all miss him.”
Nwike was a chieftain of the Action Congress of Nigeria until he died.
