The planned parley between the Minister of Sports and the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Dr. Tammy Danagogo, and the Aminu Maigari-led board of the Nigeria Football Federation to find the way forward on the crisis rocking Nigerian football could not hold as planned.
The Minister hinged the decision to cancel the meeting scheduled for Tuesday on the need to enable more time for consultations with the club owners and other stakeholders on the management crisis.
Danagogo, at a meeting with club owners on Tuesday, said he opted to meet them first before the NFF Board in order to hear them out and be better informed about the issues affection Nigerian football.
According to Danagogo: “I ordinarily would have met or received the NFF board this morning, but because of several engagements, I felt I should hear the club owners and other stakeholders first, to know what challenges are confronting them before I meet with the board.
“It will enable us to have your input to whatever I will be discussing with them. I intend to talk to your leadership, after that I will meet with the NFF privately and then proper courtesy call. I know that there are issues that must be resolved before our football can be taken to the next level.”
Confirming the reason for the cancellation, the Chairman of NFF media committee, Chief Emeka Inyama, told The Eagle Online that the meeting will hold at a later date, adding: “We could not meet because the minister said he wants to meet other stakeholders.”
Meanwhile, the Club Owners Association has called on the Sports Minister to intervene and use his position to bring a permanent end to the problem currently rocking the administration of football in the country.
Presenting their case, acting chairman of the club owners, Isaac Danladi, who led his colleagues to the visit, noted: “We the club owners seek the intervention of your good office to help in charging stakeholders to abide by the provisions of the statutes of football as sanctioned by FIFA, while the FIFA standard electoral code into the various boards of the federation and affiliate leagues.
“We the club owners last year sent a position paper to the congress of the NFF in Warri, Delta State on the need to protect the statutes and institute a proper league board for the league clubs.
“That paper is still pending with the federation, awaiting attention and implementation.”
