Javier Mascherano has confirmed his retirement from international football following Argentina’s 4-3 defeat to France in the World Cup.
The 34-year-old was unable to intervene as a stunning Kylian Mbappe double inspired Les Bleus to an incredible comeback victory and announced after the game that he has called time on his national team career.
Mascherano, who said prior to Russia 2018 that the tournament would be his last, confirmed the decision and said after the match: “It’s time to say goodbye, it’s time to support from outside. I hope that in the future these boys can achieve something.”
