LASU in talks with ASUU elders to end month-long strike – Spokesman

Authorities of the Lagos State University, Ojo said on Thursday that discussion was ongoing with the elders of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, LASU Chapter, to end their month-long strike.
The spokesman for the university, Kayode Sutton, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos that all issues relating to the strike would soon be resolved.
NAN reports that ASUU-LASU had begun an indefinite strike on May 20 to press home its demands, which include the repeal of the ‘no vacancy, no promotion’ policy.
Other demands are reduction in school fees and the implementation of the University Miscellaneous Provisions (Amendment) Act of 2012.
The institution’s Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities is also on strike.
Sutton said the management was hopeful that the deliberation with the union’s elders would bring the strike to an end.
“We have already engaged ASUU-LASU elders in discussion toward ending the strike, and we optimistic of a positive result,” he said.
The spokesman expressed the hope that the reduction in the tuition fees recently announced by the state government would also go a long way in bringing the strike to an end.
Sutton added: “The striking unions would see reasons to get back to work since their demand for a reduction in the fees has been approved by the government.”
On SSANU strike, Sutton said the management would also resolve the issues with the union.
He said: “We want to bring our discussion with ASUU to a logical conclusion before engaging SSANU in talks.
“But all the issues would soon come to an end.”
