Lagos constructs 83, rehabilitates 900 roads

The Lagos State Government on Tuesday said it had constructed 83 roads in the last 12 months in various parts of the state.
The state government also said that it repaired 900 other roads within the period.
The Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, told newsmen in Ikeja that the projects were executed simultaneously in various parts of the state.
Hamzat said traffic bearing capacity and availability of canals to discharge water were some of the criteria used in selecting the roads for construction and rehabilitation.
He said the criteria was used as the state government did not have enough funds to take care of all the projects at the same time.
“The state government is, however, comfortable that there is no Local Government Area left out,” Hamzat said.
He, however, lamented that the Ipaja-Ayobo Road had yet to be completed because the state government needed N700 million to relocate some of its infrastructure.
He said the construction of nine pedestrian bridges in parts of the state was ongoing, while the one around Cement Bus Stop along the Lagos/Abeokuta Expressway was stalled by litigation.
He urged the benefiting communities to look after the roads to prevent their abuse, adding that the ministry was meeting with such communities to correct the trend.
“Communities are not taking ownership of our roads and as such, people abuse them.
“We are now talking to them to take possession of the roads to prevent their abuse.”
