The Lagos State Police Command spokesman, Kenneth Nwosu, has complained that the continual strike embarked upon by the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria has led to the congestion of several cells in the state.
Nwosu said this during an exclusive chat with New Telegraph, adding that a quick and lasting solution should be sought to ensure the strike comes to an end.
According to him, the strike has made it impossible for the police to arraign suspects, thus constituting cell congestion.
Nwosu said: “Definitely, JUSUN strike is affecting police prosecution of suspects.
“It has affected suspects being charged to court and granted bail.
“Since these actions can’t take place, the suspects continue to be in cells.
“And yet crimes are committed and suspects apprehended every day.”
Nwosu said the police work hand in hand with the judiciary, adding that the strike is now posing a challenge to the speedy work of the police.
Nwosu however admitted that due to the current situation, the police will have to deploy discretion.
It would be recalled that JUSUN embarked on indefinite strike since January 2, 2015, demanding for implementation of court’s ruling in favour of financial autonomy from the government.
