The Media and Publicity Committee of the Nigeria Football Association on Friday said that all hopes were not lost in spite of the shaky start of the Super Eagles.
The committee’s Chairman, Emeka Inyama, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Sao Paulo, Brazil that the NFA had addressed the boys on the need to change their approach.
The Super Eagles were forced to a goal less draw by the less fancied Melli of Iran in their Group F opening match on June 16.
This result had generated an outcry from teeming football fans in Nigeria.
Inyama said: “We felt disappointed just as many Nigerians were about the eventual outcome of that match.
“I can assure you that we have addressed the boys and made them to realise why there has to be a change of approach to the June 21 encounter against Bosnia-Herzegovina in Cuiaba.”
He denied any form of squabble among the players in the camp as being speculated by sources around the team.
He said: “They are as much committed to doing well.”
Inyama said the boys were bent on performing well because the World Cup was the ultimate platform for players to showcase their skill in order to secure mouth-watering contracts.
“The World Cup is the ultimate in the life of any footballer,” he added.
In terms of performances, the NFA board member stressed that the 2014 World Cup had recorded some surprising results.
“You can see that even big countries have even taken early exit from the competition,” Inyama said in apparent reference to defending champions, Spain, and England that had virtually lost out.
Inyama, who is also the Chairman of newly-promoted Globacom Professional League side, Abia Warriors FC of Umuahia, denied rumours that the team and the board had been abandoned by the government.
He said: “That is not the correct situation.
“The custody and control of the team at this tournament lies with the NFA that acts in liaison with the FIFA.
“The government officials are working within their schedule and so everything is according to their schedule.
“They planned to watch the team’s first game and leave.
“You know top government functionaries could afford to be off their schedules for too long.”
NAN reports that the Super Eagles would lock horns with Bosnia-Herzegovina on June 20 at Cuiaba in a must-win-match.
The team had since arrived Cuiaba, ahead of the crucial game that would determine the future of the team in the competition.
