The Independent National Electoral Commission on Tuesday in Lagos said it would soon roll out information on the planned constituency delineation in the state.
Dr. Adekunle Ogunmola, the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Lagos State, said this at a one-day sensitisation tour of Lagos Mainland Local Government on “Delineation of Constituencies and Continuous Registration of Voters”.
The sensitisation tour would cover all the 20 local government areas of the state.
Ogunmola said: “There must be transparency, fairness and representativeness in delineation, but the problem we are going to have is that we cannot change the number of constituencies for now.
“Until there is an amendment to the constitution, but we can adjust boundaries.
“That way, it will be easier for us to carry out our jobs fairly.”
Ogunmola promised that the commission would carry everybody along and that it could not do the work alone.
The electoral commissioner said that jingles and rallies would be carried out in order to enlighten and educate the people on the importance of voting.
He also planned to meet and solicit the support of traditional rulers.
Ogunmola told the electorates that when it was time to register, they would be notified.
He said: “Why we are not ready now is because we do not want to give you a system that is faulty.”
He also said that all polling units must have polling booths, and that all electoral materials would be provided and delivered days before the Election Day.
Ogunmola explained that following the shortcomings the commission noticed in the 2011 general elections, it was working to ensure the problems were tackled.
He appealed to the general public to give priority to the pregnant, the aged and the physically challenged at the point of voting.
The electoral commissioner also said that party agents should at all time work jointly with the security personnel.
Oladele Adekanye, the Chairman of Lagos Mainland Local Government Area, expressed satisfaction with the exercise.
According to Adekanye, it has given market women, religious leaders and party leaders the opportunity to say their minds.
He said: “It is a very good exercise because people have been able to tell INEC its defects and how it can correct all its mistakes.
“If they put in place everything they have promised, then, there will be credible elections.”
Adekanye appealed to INEC to ensure it tested the devices and the methods it planned to use in 2015, to ensure there would not be any failure of the elections.
