Residents of Anambra have urged the State House of Assembly to embrace peace and unity in handling the recent crisis that led to impeachment of former Speaker, Rita Maduagwu.
Some of the residents who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria in Awka on Thursday while reacting to the development called for peaceful resolution of the crisis.
Godwin Ezeemo, a former governorship candidate of the Progressives Peoples Alliance, expressed worry over the development saying that it would disrupt the existing peace in the state.
According to Ezeemo, the present situation at the State House of Assembly gives room to worry and I urge the key players of the impeachment saga to know that the peaceful nature of the state remains paramount to our personal interest.
He said: “I believe that the issues at hand can be handled over a roundtable and be resolved whichever way that will unite the state for good.”
The political stalwart said that the issues should not be a distraction on legislative responsibilities and called on the lawmakers and the executive arm of government to harmonise and resolve the issue through dialogue.
Ezeemo said that Anambra under a peaceful and harmonious coexistence amongst the leaders would thrive and record greater achievements.
He said that the lawmakers had a wonderful performance over the years and described the legislature as the engine room of every government.
He, however, called on stakeholders and concerned persons to take immediate action in the best interest of the state.
Obioma Onukwube, a resident of the state said that the lawmakers should not emulate bad examples from other state lawmakers in the country but should engage peaceful tool in resolving any bickering.
Prof Raphael Okigbo, a resident of the state, described the incident as `unfortunate’ and advised that the allegations of misappropriation and gross misconduct leveled against Maduagwu should be investigated.
Okigbo said that people were becoming politically aware and urged political leaders not to trade with the hearts of the people but always have in mind that leadership at all levels demanded accountability.
Another resident, Christian Beluchukwu, said that the issues that led to the crisis should be looked into to avoid future occurrence.
NAN reports that the state legislators broke into two factions after resuming plenary on November 13 where the sitting speaker was impeached by 22 of the 30 members of the assembly on account of alleged financial misappropriation and high handedness.
