The third edition of the Ike-Oha U-18 Unity Football championship ended on Friday in Enugu with Udi Local Government Area emerging champions, with an emphatic 2-0 win over their Aninri counterparts.
The new champions were tournament’ runner-up in the last two editions.
Playing inside the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu, in the presence of the sponsor, the Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, and two other senators, Ayogu Eze and Hope Uzodinma, the Udi lads shot into the lead with a sublime strike from Alex Onyia in the 38th minute of play.
The championship highest scorer, Solomon Nsude, made it two for the lads from Udi as he dribbled his way through a sea of legs to score 10 minutes into the second half.
As much as the Aninri boys tried to find a way past the backline of Udi, they could not as splendid goalkeeping and resolute defending ensured the game ended on that note.
Senator Ekweremadu, in his speech after the medals presentation, said: “It gives me great pleasure to witness this great show of soccer artistry from these young lads. It encourages me to continue to sponsor this championship and I know that before long, my other colleagues in the senate will join in doing same for their various zones. This is just one of the ways of giving back to the society.”
The Chairman of the Enugu State Football Association, Chidi Ofo Okenwa, said: “This is the way to go and I am very happy that the youths of Enugu State are the better for it. With more of this kind of competition, I am very sure that Enugu State would be the breeding ground of future national youth teams.”
Medals, trophies and cash prizes were presented to deserving players, coaches and other officials.
