Facts have emerged that Senators kept Vigil in the National Assembly on Monday night ahead of the nomination of Chairmen of the Senate Standing Committees, The Eagle Online has been informed.
The Eagle Online gathered that before the list was released by the President of the Senate, Senator Ahmad Lawan, there was a meeting in the National Assembly complex on how to allocate chairmanship of the “juicy” Committees in the Senate.
Lawan at the plenary session on Tuesday released the chairmanship and deputy chairmanship of 69 Standing Committees.
The Peoples Democratic Party Senators got 20 Committees Chairmanship slots, while the All Progressives Congress got 49.
The Eagle Online observed that the Senate President did not announce the Selection Committee before the he released the list.
This was unlike what obtained in the past when the Senate President always announced the Selection Committee, which in turn decides who gets what.
Thus, the lawmakers stayed behind in the National Assembly as Ahmad worked out who got what until the early hours of Tuesday.
It was after he left the office that the senators also departed for their home and then resumed for plenary in the morning.
The Eagle Online also noticed that membership of the Standing Committees is shrouded in secrecy at the time of filing this report.
The Senate President only announced the Chairmen and Vice Chairmen.
