A member of the House of Representatives representing Yewa North and Imeko-Afon Federal Constituency and Chairman of the House Committee on Financial Crimes, Hon. Kayode Oladele, has expressed his deep condolences at the passing away of Kofi Annan, the first African Secretary-General of the United Nations and Nobel Peace Laureate.
In a statement, Oladele said Annan’s death is a great loss to Africa and a huge loss to the global community.
He added: “As the 7th United Nations Secretary General from 1996 to 2006, Mr. Annan reformed the United Nations, he fought for a more peaceful world, democracy and human rights, climate change, gender equality and the eradication of poverty and child mortality all of which he brought to the Agenda of the United Nations through the initiation of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
“He was an exemplary leader, an extraordinary diplomat and an outstanding statesman whose achievements and work for the attainment of a more just, peaceful and egalitarian world will not always be remembered but will ever remain a reference point for years to come.”
Describing Annan as a great mentor, strong inspiration and guiding force to many African intellectuals, Oladele stated that he was a proud son of Africa who unarguably, as one of the greatest and most revered United Nations Secretaries-General, brought more dignity, respect and global attention to Africa.
“He used the most impossible job on earth to accomplish the most impossible task,” Oladele said.
