A group, Women Arise For Change Initiative, on Wednesday stormed the Ebute-Meta Magistrates’ Court in Lagos protesting the alleged killing of one Idongesit Ekpo by a Police Corporal.
The group, led by its leader, Joe Okei-Odumakin, was seen carrying placards with inscriptions like: Train our police to respect human rights, Women’s right is human rights, Time to upgrade the Nigeria Police.
Addressing the protesters, Okei-Odumakin called for comprehensive medical treatment of Godwin Ekpo, who was allegedly hit by a stray bullet fired by the Corporal at Ijegun, near Lagos.
She said the police force should be made to settle all the medical bills and also compensate Ekpo for the killing of his wife.
Okei-Odumakin said the deceased, still at the mortuary, should be given a befitting burial.
The nine-year-old daughter of the deceased, Blessing Godwin, recounted how her mother was allegedly gunned down by the police on their way home from church on September 17.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that a police corporal attached to Isheri-Oshun Division in Lagos, onSeptember 17, fired a shot at a tricycle along the Isheri-Ijegun Road, killing the wife of the operator on the spot.
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, ordered immediate arrest of members of the team on duty on the night of the incident.
The killer policeman, Corporal Musefun Aremu, has since been dismissed from service for the killing of Ekpo.
