Gideon Goyeto of the Plateau Command of Nigeria Customs on Saturday in Enugu won the maiden Coal City International Half-marathon with a time of one hour six minutes 57 seconds.
He went home with a cheque of $3,500 as prize money, with the runner-up Adamu Shehu, also of the Customs’ Plateau Command, returning in a time of 1.07:39.
Kenya’s Matthew Gocheke won the third position after returning a time of 1.08:56.
Gocheke’s female compatriots however dominated the female category of the race, with Nancy Jesang returning a time of 1.15:57 and Judith Cherono a time of 1.17:10.
Deborah Pam, from Jos in Plateau, came third in a time of 1:19:32.
Speaking after the race, Enugu State Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Joseph Udi, expressed satisfaction with the level of the race’s organisation.
He added: “Even though the exercise may have witnessed some hiccups, there is always room for improvement.”
He however thanked the state governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, for creating an enabling environment for the race.
In his remarks, the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, who was a guest at the race, applauded the organisers for staging “such a wonderful event”.
He also praised the athletes for displaying true spirit of sportsmanship by abiding by the rules of the race.
