The Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Internationale Zusammenarbeit on Thursday said as part of plans to view the dwindling allocation from the Federation Account, it has trained 40 revenue collectors to improve Internally Generated Revenue in Niger State.
In his remarks, the State Business Enabling Environment Adviser for Local Reforms, Babafemi Oyediran, disclosed in Bosso Local Government Area of Niger State at a capacity building workshop aimed at equipping collectors with efficient modern ways and skills in tax collection that tax harmonisation is what the state needs.
Oyediran said GIZ is in partnership with the state government in the area of tax reforms as it has become necessary in view of the dwindling allocation from the federation account.
According to him: “We are undertaking this training to build the capacity of revenue and
information officers in exploring all sources of revenue and blocking areas of leakages.
“It has become more important than ever for the state to strengthen its revenue generation capacity so that it can stop borrowing to pay salaries of workers and meet other obligations.”
Oyediran, who said similar exercises will be carried out in two other local government areas of Bida and Wushishi, disclosed that the training of collectors have been undertaken in eight states.
The Niger State Government had only last week inaugurated a tax harmonization committee to review and streamline its taxes and levies.
