Fuel queues on Tuesday returned to Lagos State.
Though the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation blamed it on the strike action embarked upon by members of the National Association of Road Transport Owners and the Petroleum Tanker Drivers, the scarcity of petrol is coming at the expiration of the three days ultimatum given by the Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria to the Federal Government.
While NARTO and PTD are engaged in a face-off with MOMAN, the major oil marketers are angry with the Federal Government for not paying its members’ subsidy claims.
In most parts of Lagos State, long queues had returned.
From the Island to the Mainland, motorists spent several hours at filling stations to buy fuel.
And while the official pump price for petrol remains N87, some filling stations were selling for between N100 and N130.
Some filling stations also barricaded their entrances, collecting fees ranging from between N200 and N500 to allow motorists in.
Black marketers also had a field day on Tuesday, selling a litre of fuel for as much as N200.
But the NNPC has blamed the scarcity on the face-off between members of NARTO and PTD on the one hand and MOMAN on the other for the scarcity.
NNPC’s spokesman, Ohi Alegbe, said the strike was in protest of the huge amount NARTO and PTD members claimed they are being owed by major oil marketers.
Alegbe said in a statement: “We are, however, working towards a speedy resolution of the issues to ensure a hitch-free distribution of products across the country.”
The NNPC said it has enough stock of petrol to service the country for 27 days at a national consumption rate of 40 million litres per day.
