FRSC to deploy officials to Lagos/Ibadan Expressway during festive period, to curb crashes

The Ogun Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Clement Ogundele, on Fridaysaid that the corps would deploy its officials to the Lagos/Ibadan Expressway and its environs, to check road crashes during festive period.
Ogundele disclosed this during the Ember Months Enlightenment Campaign Rally organised by the Itori Unit of the corps in Ogun.
According to him, there will be an increase in vehicular movement on the roads, especially during the Christmas and New Year period that will fall on Sundays and more people are likely to travel to see their loved ones.
He said that the FRSC would deploy its officials to the Lagos/Ibadan Expressway, Ijebu-Ode and Sagamu, to ensure sanity on the roads.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the rally had as its theme: “Crash the Crash: Speed Kills’’.
The sector commander noted that an average of 6,000 vehicles were on the roads on a normal day, but during the festive period, no fewer than 10,000 vehicles would be on the roads.
Ogundele said: “The increase in vehicular movement during the ember months and the festive period had necessitated that the FRSC officials are on the roads to check excesses of drivers, as well as protect lives and property.
“We also want to see travellers get to their destinations safely, without hitches.’’
Ogundele, however, appealed to motorists to desist from speeding and to ensure that their vehicles were properly maintained before embarking on any journey.
He also implored commercial drivers to install the Speed Limiting Device in their vehicles before the FRSC starts arresting offenders from February 1, 2017.
Ogundele noted that device had the potential to reduce road crashes by about 35per cent.
