Four policemen who were supposed to be on guard at the residence of former President Goodluck Jonathan’s uncle, Chief Inegite Nitabai, when he was kidnapped have been detained by the Police.
Reliable sources at the Bayelsa State Police Command told the News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday that the policemen were being interrogated as part of investigation into the kidnap.
Spokesman for Police in Bayelsa State, Asinim Butswat, told NAN that the Police had launched a manhunt for the kidnappers.
It will be recalled that Chief Nitabai, who was abducted on February 17, had been kidnapped earlier on February 28, 2014 in his house and was later freed by security forces at Akipli community in Ogbia on March 10, 2014.
A family member, Igbogiamini Paul, told NAN that the policemen were absent when the kidnappers invaded the residence of Jonathan’s uncle.
Paul said if they had been on ground, the old man would not have been easily abducted as there would have been resistance from them.
The family source said arrangement for the burial of Samuel Oki, who was abducted with the 72-year-old man and killed by the kidnappers, had begun.
