As President Goodluck Jonathan continued his nationwide tour of flood affected states in Nigeria, the National Emergency Management Agency said it has further registered 54,363 Internally Displaced Persons in established camps in Bayelsa and River States.
The agency has so far registered 35,126 IDPs in six affected local government areas of Bayelsa State, while 19,237 have been registered in four affected local government areas in Rivers State.
A statement by the Head, Public Relations of NEMA, Yushau Shuaib, added: “The agency is also encouraging registered Non-Governmental Organisations, volunteers and community leaders to support in the management of the established camps.”
The South South Zonal Coordinator of NEMA, Umesi Emenike, also disclosed that the agency may continue to establish more camps in the two states, where necessary, to accommodate influx of people moving away from their houses as the volume of water continues to rise in some of the communities.
NEMA also said it has continued to provide relief materials to all the camps, especially food items, drugs, beddings, clothing and toiletries based on rapid response assessment needs.
