The Federal Government has approved the composition of a National Council on Power to reposition the power sector and ensure improved power supply to Nigerians.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Power, Godknows Igali, made the disclosure at the 6th Power Summit/Civil Society Organisations Forum in Abuja on Thursday.
Igali said that the council would comprise major stakeholders in the power sector.
He expressed optimism that the council would support the transformation agenda of President Goodluck Jonathan in the sector and ultimately improve the power situation in the country.
He stressed the need for all stakeholders to work as a team and called on participants at the conference to join hands with the Federal Government in transforming the sector.
The Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, said the conference would give industry players the opportunity to review activities in the sector and proffer solutions to its challenges.
Nebo said the Federal Government had recorded giant strides in the sector, especially with the recent privatisation of the sector.
According to him, a lot still needed to be done in ensuring stable power supply to Nigerians.
He said the Federal Government had inaugurated a lot of National Integrated Power Projects across the country, but decried the non-availability of gas to power some of the plants.
He also decried the activities of vandals on the gas pipelines and other infrastructure, and called on the media and civil society organisations to join hands in curbing the menace.
Bebop said: “We have been working together with the National Security Adviser, Civil Defence Corps, Army and other security operatives, to give adequate protection to these national assets.”
The UNIDO Regional Director, Dr. Patrick Kormawa, said that the deregulation of the power sector would go a long way to fast track the economic transformation of the country.
Kormawa, a member of the Development Partners Coordination Group on Power, said the partners would continue to work with the Federal Government to ensure the actualisation of the power sector reforms.
The two-day conference, with the theme: “Maintaining Sustainable Service Delivery in the Transition and Post-Privatisation Era,” is meant to forge new partnership and reposition the sector.
The conference is being attended by officials from the ministry, National Assembly, Civil Society Organisations, International Donor partners, Transmission Company of Nigeria and other stakeholders in the power sector.
