The draw for the 2016 Federation Cup in Oba, Anambra State ended abruptly on Thursday following the arrest of Chijioke Onyedika, the Secretary of Anambra State Football Association, by the Police.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that owners, managers, officials and supporters of the 62 clubs, which registered for the competition, were barely returning from recess when policemen arrived.
They consequently produced an order from a Magistrate Court for Onyedika’s arrest.
Following this development, Joshua Onoja, the Secretary of the Nigerian Football Federation Election Committee for ASFA, who was presiding over the event, called off the event until further notice.
A source at the venue of the event said Onyedika’s arrest was connected with the activities of the Clifford Iloegbune-led five-man ASFA Harmonisation Committee between April and August 2014.
Ikechukwu Igbokwe, the immediate past Vice-Chairman of ASFA, who spoke to newsmen at the occasion, said the arrest might be connected with an investigation.
Igbokwe said: “It is the beginning of investigation into the manner they handled the proceeds from the sale of forms.”
Odi Ikpeazu, the Chairman of Ikpeazu Redoubtable FC, said the failure to conduct the ASFA elections had taken the football game in the state to an abysmal level.
Ikpeazu prayed that the matter be resolved soon and better the lot of football in Anambra.
