Bayo Onanuga, the Managing Director of the News Agency of Nigeria, on Friday urged the agency’s soccer team, NAN News Merchants FC, to exhibit good sportsmanship in the 2016 Lagos SWAN Cup.
The event officially kicked off at the National Stadium, Lagos on Friday.
Onanuga, who spoke to members of the “giant killing” squad shortly after they rounded up their training at the team’s Iganmu base, said he was certain they would defeat their first opponents, the Voice of Nigeria.
He said: “But be lenient with them.
“Please limit the number of goals you will score against them.
“They are sister organisation to NAN.
“I want you to win and win fairly.
“And rest assured that will morally and financially support you.
“Reach through Joe Bankole, the current Director/Head of Lagos Office.”
The MD noted that since the event was to rally media practitioners together to socialise, the objective should not be lost on the team.
Tony Nezianya, a Director/NAN Head of Sports, assured that the team would heed the MD’s advice.
According to Nezianya: “We want to say thank you for all the support and we are confident of doing the agency proud at the competition.”
The News Merchants of Iganmu have been scheduled to play in Group B alongside teams from Voice of Nigeria, New Telegraph and SuperSport.
SWAN Cup is organised by the Lagos State chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria and sponsored by the Winners Golden Belt Company.
The competition is the fourth in the series and holding at the National Stadium, Lagos.
It ends on July 30.
